2013 U.S. Open Recap

The 31st annual US OPEN was a fantastic event. For those of you that were not able to fish it I hope you tuned in to the live webcast that was presented by Costa Del Mar. Billy Egan and his staff pulled off one heck of a show!

PRE PRACTICE: I spent 3 days of pre practice two weeks before the official practice period started. I fished mostly reaction style baits to strictly locate fish. I used a s waver style bait from savage gear lures that produced a ton of followers. My go to bait was a Rio Rico (any color was getting great blowups) The Suave caught a few as well. My game plan was to basically have a fun fishing trip and catch a few just to see what size of fish different areas of the lake were holding. I was on a solid pattern of about 9-12 lbs a day and was comfortable with what I found. The lake was down about 11.5 feet from last year so my areas in 2012 were all basically out of the water. The water level wasn't too much of a big deal as the fish were holding the same way as last year.

PRACTICE: Major fronts and monsoon type conditions really changed the fishing for me and the top water bite was basically gone. I had to rely on fishing soft plastic stick baits, and wacky rigged finesse worms on a drop shot to get the quality bites. The jig was good but never got the big bites to go along with it. My favorite colors when drop shotting were the folkestad special and MMIII for the robo worm. I was wacky rigging a fish arrow bait called the fall shaker which seemed to account for 80% of my fish in practice. I also used a 3d crawdad bait from Savage Gear which the smallies just ate em up. I ran out of those crawdads on my practice so I switched to the jig and used a 1/2 living rubber jig with a twin tail hula grub for a trailer. On both the senko and the wacky rigged drop shot I was using never slip bait tape which saved me about 70 bucks worth of money in soft plastics. I was able to catch 8-10 fish before having to replace each bait. This stuff is well worth the money. I don't have them pictured below because I ran out and gave some out to other fisherman as samples.. My rico box was basically picked through by everyone and their brother as well. But hey that's how it goes, if someone needs a bait on my team or vice versa we all try and help each other out.. Most of the bait fish seemed to move down from practice going into the tournament so I would throw the top water and crank on the long tapering points and walls pretty fast and then would slow down in every pocket where the grass and trees were at and then pick it apart with the Fish Arrow fall shaker worm and nail rigged senko.

TOURNAMENT: Junk fishing at its finest was the name of the game! I had 8 rods on the deck and basically used 3 rods for 90% off the day. The other 5 rods where for specific areas and were only given 4 to 5 casts to see if I could get a big bite. I relied on two rods for days two and three. A nail rigged senko and a wacky rigged drop shot.. See pics below.. The senko was a 330 yamamoto 5 inch, and the wacky rigged worm was a green pumkin fall shaker from Fish Arrow. Both produced big numbers both days.. On days two and three I had my limits by 9 am each morning and then went searching for a big one the rest of the day with a Damiki DC 400 crank bait. DAy 1 weight was 5.62, Day 2 weight was 8.39 and day 3 was 8.67. One good bite was all I needed to cash a check. In retrospect, I learned a lot from my fishing and the decisions I made each day. I will take all the info and put it to work for next year to help me get on them much quicker in practice and have a successful tournament.

SPONSORS: A very special thanks goes to Lobina Lures, Fish Arrow, YGK, Damiki Baits, Savage Gear, Never Slip Bait Tape, Mattress Depot, A and M Graphics, without these wonderful companies I would not have the ability to compete against the best in the west! Thank you All. Stay tuned for my next blog where I will be giving detailed information on the new Savage Gear 3d line through trout baits. And big pics from Canyon Lake this fall. The swimbait bite is coming!!!!!!!!

I CAST 2013 and the US OPEN!

Well ICAST was a huge success overall for the fishing industry in general! There are so many amazing products coming out! I spent most of my two days running from booth to booth promoting my sponsors who are taking care of me for the 2013/2014 season! First and foremost I would like to extend a sincere thanks to the following companies.

1. Fish Arrow The makers of the famous Flash J and high end Japanese line YGK! Without these guys I would be behind the eight ball on learning new tricks of the trade! I always look forward to their visits to the United States to take them fishing and show me some cool new products coming out of Japan! My favorite bait to throw from this company is the 6 inch fall shaker paired up with a wicky head.. (That's the prop hook you've been hearing about) The Hook Up Tackle Company in Phoenix carrys the fish arrow line so check them out! Wait till you see the FA Hog. (Puts the chigger craw to shame!)

2. Never Slip Bait Tape If you throw a senko wacky rigged you will love this amazing product! Check out the videos and you will save money on your favorite stick baits and learn a few cool tricks with throwing a ball head jig with a grub trailer. This product has a wide variety of uses. The possibilities are endless!

3. Savage Gear USA I had the pleasure to stand along side the man behind Savage Gear. Mads Grosell. This man eats, sleeps, and thinks fish!! Check out tackle warehouse and look for the new crawdad from Savage Gear. For you swimbait guys, well let me just say, your in for a treat. Check out the real trout swimbait! I am going to be helping Mads and his team to fine tune the color scheme of the crawdad baits and I will let you know once we are done!

4. Damiki Baits Mr Kim and his gang have come out with a Frog, Top Water Bait, A new square bill crank bait and some cool new soft plastics. Just follow and look at Bryan Thrift's track Record on the FLW tour and you'll know why he is among one of the top touring pros of the FLW.

I CAST is a special time of year for me because I get to see friends from back east that we only get to watch on TV.

Now on to the US OPEN! It's no secret that one has to be well diversified on fishing ever changing conditions! You have to train yourself physically and emotionally for this huge event! Fishing against Mike Folkestad, John Murray, Rick Clunn, A Mart and the rest of the Elite boys is no easy task! I am so excited to fish this 31st annual event! It is sure to be a success! Just like last year you can watch this event which will be streamed live on the web so check out http://www.wonbass.com for more details!

Sorry it's been so long since the last blog but business has been slow in the mattress industry and I have been working 80 hour weeks to keep my triton/Mercury 250 Pro XS afloat!!!

Hall of Famers, T.O.C, Bass A Thon, new sponsors!

It's been a whirl wind of a summer so far. I don't know where to start. I cashed a check in this years U.S Open at Lake Mead. I look forward to that event every year. I had a great pattern going in practice and it fizzed out as the lake was getting more and more pressure each day. Regardless it's always good to see all my friends and competing against the best guys in the business!
I would like to extend a sincere congratulations to my best friend and newest member into both the Fresh water Hall of Fame as well as the Bass Fishing Hall of Fame Mike Folkestad! Wow to be inducted into both organizations in the same year and still be fishing is quite an accomplishment. Mike is the best in the business period! On and off the water he is a true professional! Way to go Mikey!!!
We just finished our last event of the year for the Won Bass organization up at Clear Lake. I finished in 5th place overall for the Daiwa cup Angler of the Year. To be in the top 10 was one of my goals for the year so overall I am extremly happy with my performance. I know the changes I need to make next year to go after the cup. It's nice to see companies like Daiwa help the anglers out and give us something to shoot for as far as prize money at the end of the year. So Thanks Bill Liston from the Daiwa corp!
This year I have had a couple of new companies sign me on board to fish and represent there companies. I am proud to now be aligned with Damiki Fishing, SavageGear, and Fish Arrow Co. Damiki makes some killer soft plastic baits with my favorite being the Hydra bait. If your doing any bed fishing this upcoming spring your missing the boat if you don't have the hydra in your arsenal. Savage-Gear is flat out the bomb!!! These guys make some unique baits for both fresh water and saltwater fishing applications! Check out the 4 Play swim bait and the lip scull. One of the coolest products I have been using is the new bait tape! Just click on the link and consider it a favor!!! Finally Fish Arrow, this company is based out of Japan and make the best line period! The attention to detail in every application of there products is by far the best I have ever seen. Check out the Flash J...
Bass a Thon is right around the corner over in Southern California and you don't want to miss out on this unique event! Anglers from all over the west come to this event and get the latest and greatest baits that are hitting the market for the upcoming year! Tons and Tons of deals on everything from boats to bait!
I would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holidays this year! I am looking forward to eating some Turkey and playing some golf with the family. A special thanks to Jennifer Duff at Lobina Lures for being my title sponsor for the 2012 season. As we all know Jennifer is the most talented and amazing women in the bass fishing industry. Check out the newest Rico baits in Klicka shad and Risque. When your ready for the topwater bite there is nothing like fishing with a Rico!
